One person charged in sudden death investigation

LONG LAKE 58 FIRST NATION – The Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 31-year-old man from Edmonton in connection with a death investigation in Long Lake 58 First Nation. 

On November 18, 2023, members of the Greenstone OPP Detachment responded to a report of a deceased individual near Highway 11 in Long Lake 58 First Nation.

The deceased was later identified as Kathleen Desmoulin, 41-years-old, of Long Lake 58 First Nation. 

As a result of the investigation, the OPP issued an arrest warrant for Gurmeet Singh Brar, from Edmonton, Alberta. 

Brar has been charged with Failure to Stop at Accident Resulting in Death contrary to Section 320.16 (3) of the Criminal Code. 

With the assistance of the Canadian Border Services Agency and Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Brar was arrested and taken into custody in Saskatchewan on May 20. 

The OPP subsequently returned him to Ontario, where he is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on May 25.   

The investigation is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
