Taken near Highway 552 East, the Northern Lights peaked in activity around midnight

Residents in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area were gifted one of the most spectacular Northern Lights shows in recent memory overnight. 

Social media is full of photos and video of the spectacle as the lights danced across the night sky for millions of viewers across the continent.

According to the Weather Network, a massive filament of solar matter peeled away from the Sun and launched into space, which caused the massive solar storm.

Aurora Forecast says the storm ranked a 10 out of 10 on its strength scale in many parts of the country, and even surpassed alert thresholds.
