RED ROCK — It was sad news in Red Rock this past week.
Gary Nelson, who served as mayor of Red Rock for 13 years from 2007 to 2021, passed away on Aug. 8 after a short battle with leukemia. He was 81 years old.
Nelson was a fixture of the Red Rock community, having worked at the former pulp mill for over 40 years before retiring.
He was also heavily involved with the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Department, Teen Town, and the Beautification Committee. Nelson was described by council as “always ready and eager to lend a helping hand.”
In May 2022, Nelson was recognized for his many years of service in the community when current Mayor Darquise Robinson and council presented him with the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for 50 years of volunteer service.
In a statement shared with the public, Robinson – Nelson’s immediate successor – said he served Red Rock with “distinction and dedication.”
“His tenure as mayor had a period of challenges and positive change, guided by his unwavering commitment to the people he represented.
“Beyond his achievements in office, Mayor Nelson was known for his deep compassion and genuine care for all residents, always taking the time to listen, understand, and act in the best interests of the community.
“Mayor Nelson was more than a public servant; he was a beloved member of our community, a mentor to me, and a friend to all. A true gentleman.
“As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the many contributions he made to our town. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and all who knew him during this time of sorrow,” Robinson wrote.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Red Rock Legion Branch 226, with members of the public invited to drop-in anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
The Canadian flag at Red Rock’s Municipal Building will be lowered to half-mast until Friday, Aug. 16.
