Five new forest fires break out in Northwestern Ontario

DRYDEN — Ministry of Natural Resources firefighting crews were called out Sunday to deal with five new wildland fires in Northwestern Ontario.

Four of the fires were still considered not under control as of Monday morning.

These included a 1.0 hectare fire in Wabakimi Provincial Park, a 1.0 hectare fire five kilometres northeast of the Geraldton airport, and smaller fires 11 kilometres east of Pickle Lake and nine kilometres northeast of Mishkeegogamang First Nation.

The fifth fire, 12 kilometres southwest of Pickle Lake, is under control.

There are currently six active fires in the Northwest Region, four of which are not under control and two of which are under control.

The MNR reports the forest fire hazard across the region ranges from low to extreme.
