Area First Nations getting Great Lakes project funding

Pays Plat First Nation

More provincial dollars are being directed into projects surrounding the Great Lakes in a more concerted effort to protect them.

The province recently announced funding for projects for the Great Lakes, including Lake Superior. A grand total of $1.14 million will be invested in four projects — with 2 projects of $12,000 going to Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation and Pays Plat First Nation.

Pays Plat First Nation's role will be leading a fish consumption survey that will provide important information for assessing fish consumption concerns in the Jackfish Bay Area of Concern along Lake Superior.

Boating Ontario Association will be receiving a $42,000 investment which is to survey association members on how hazardous waste and recyclable materials are managed, along with the benefits of boating on a "Clean Marine" rated facility.

The largest investment of $1.07M is going to ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability (Management) Inc (which represents communities across the great lakes basin). A climate resource centre will be piloted, along with enhancing a drinking water vulnerability assessment tool.
