NIPIGON — Two commercial vehicles – a transport truck and a delivery van – have been pulled out of service by the OPP because they were deemed unsafe for the road.

Officers investigated a collision that saw a tractor-trailer strike a light pole on Sunday on Highway 11/17 in the Township of Nipigon.

When they took a close look at the condition of the vehicle, they noticed a large crack in a suspension component near a rear axle.

They also determined that some of the tires were unsafe because they were under-inflated.

A 29-year-old driver from Woodstock was charged with operating an unsafe vehicle, failing to report a collision, and making an unsafe move from one lane to another lane or shoulder of a road.

In another incident Sunday, OPP conducted a traffic stop on a delivery van in Nipigon, and found its tires were so worn that there was no tread.

A 21-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with operating an unsafe vehicle and failing to provide proof of insurance.

The fine for driving a commercial vehicle, or pulling a trailer, with a major defect is a minimum of $390.

Police said drivers are responsible for conducting mandatory safety checks before starting a trip.
