Charges laid after theft from elderly man in a wheelchair

AROLAND FIRST NATION — Multiple charges have been laid against a resident of Aroland First Nation after an incident in the community over the weekend.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) investigated a report that an elderly man who uses a wheelchair was the victim of a theft on Saturday.

According to NAPS, he had received a visit from a woman who then entered his bedroom, retrieved a bag of his belongings, and fled.

"The victim is in his 70s and makes use of a wheelchair, which made him uniquely vulnerable to this theft," police said in a news release Monday.

Within thirty minutes, officers located a suspect in Nakina and found that she was driving a pickup truck without licence plates.

They conducted a traffic stop, completed an arrest without incident, and recovered the man's stolen items.

Police said an unsuccessful attempt allegedly had also been made to use his bank debit card.

The victim and the 38-year-old accused are known to each other.

Charges include theft under $5,000, operating a vehicle without insurance, driving a vehicle without plates, and driving a vehicle without a permit.
