Pursuit: Volunteer coaches make youth t-ball and softball league possible

The Municipality of Greenstone shared how volunteers are vital for the maintenance and continued offering of sports programs. Without these volunteers, the youth in their community could not join sports leagues for Soccer, Tball or Softball.

GREENSTONE — The volunteer coaches in Greenstone are helping make youth t-ball and softball leagues exist this summer.

The Greenstone economic development and communications officer, Haley Garvie, said the municipality could not run these types of programs without the help of volunteers.

Often volunteers coming forward to help, do not necessarily have the sports background to coach. However, Garvie said, "we provide them with packages with information and learning materials and when they start, to help them as coaches."

Volunteers are also former players themselves, and without their selfless willingness to help, many of the sporting activities that Greenstone offers the youth in their community and region could not be possible.

Garvie wants the public to know that there is still room for the older age group to register for t-ball and softball leagues.

Families registering their child are asked to ensure that they have a baseball glove and running shoes and if they choose, they can also bring their own bat.

Longlac t-ball and doftball will be held at Jeff Gauthier Baseball Field every Tuesday and Wednesday beginning on May 31 and will run for eight weeks, until July 20.

Geraldton t-ball and Softball will be held at the Baseball Field behind the arena every Tuesday and Wednesday beginning on May 31 and also run for eight weeks until July 20.

Interested families should be aware that there will be a maximum of 20 children per group, so should register as early as possible.

To register, visit Greenstone's website.

The Municipality also wants their community to know that a new call-out for volunteers for the soccer summer program scheduled to run this August will be going out shortly.

Interested community members willing to volunteer for these programs can find more information by visiting the municipality's website.
